It is applied to immortalize wood. : Yakisugi 焼杉 Shou Sugi Ban 焼杉板 The Japanese art of Yakisugi is a traditional Japanese method of preserving wood by lightly charring the surface of the wood to increase durability. It is also called Shou Sugi Ban in the West. Yakisugi can be literally translated as “burnt cedar.” It was used as a traditional method to protect wood cladding surfaces, mostly for exterior cladding in traditional Japanese homes, at a time when chemical wood preservatives were not yet available. This method of Yakisugi extends the life of siding by preventing rotting; insect and mold infestation; It makes the planks more dimensionally stable and increases fire permeability.
